Who Zig Ziglar was

Zig Ziglar became one of America’s most popular motivational speakers and authors. He wrote See You at the Top and dozens of books on sales, leadership, and personal development.

The struggle

Ziglar was born in 1926 in Alabama and grew up during the Great Depression. He lost his father and a sister when he was young. He served in the Navy during World War II, then tried a series of sales jobs. He struggled to make a living.

Early in his career, he approached selling as a contest he had to win. He pushed products, used pressure tactics, and often failed. Then a mentor challenged him to focus on serving customers instead of outsmarting them. His results improved.

The turning point

Ziglar began teaching salespeople to build relationships, tell the truth, and believe in what they sold. In 1975 he published See You at the Top, which became a bestseller. He travelled the world for decades, giving speeches filled with stories, humour, and encouragement.

His message was simple but powerful: your attitude determines your altitude. Treat people with respect. Do the right thing. Success follows.

“You can have everything in life you want, if you will just help other people get what they want.”

The principle

The best salespeople are helpers first. Ziglar’s turnaround came when he stopped seeing customers as opponents and started seeing them as people with problems he could solve.

Apply it today

In any negotiation, conversation, or pitch, ask: what does this person actually need? If your product or idea helps, say so clearly. If it does not, walk away. Trust builds a longer career than any single sale.
