Who Stephen Covey was

Stephen Covey wrote The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, one of the best-selling nonfiction books of all time. He built a global consulting and training business.

The struggle

Covey was born in 1932 in Salt Lake City. He served a Mormon mission in Britain, earned an MBA from Harvard, and became a professor at Brigham Young University. He was a serious academic with no ambition to be famous.

In the 1980s he left academia to start a training company based on his ideas. He believed that modern self-help was too focused on tricks and personality. He wanted to teach character and principles instead.

The early years were slow. The business world wanted quick fixes. Covey offered hard work on integrity, vision, and relationships.

The turning point

In 1989 he published The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The habits — be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek first to understand, synergise, sharpen the saw — became a global language for personal and organisational development.

The book sold more than 25 million copies. Covey consulted with presidents, CEOs, and educators. He founded FranklinCovey, a company that still trains leaders worldwide.

“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing.”

The principle

Effectiveness is not about doing more. It is about doing what matters. Covey’s work reminded people that integrity, relationships, and renewal are not soft skills. They are the foundation of lasting success.
