Who Barbara McClintock was
Barbara McClintock was a geneticist who discovered that genes can move within chromosomes. Her work transformed our understanding of heredity and earned her the 1983 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
The struggle
McClintock was born in 1902 in Hartford, Connecticut. Her mother initially opposed her going to college, fearing it would make her unmarriageable. McClintock went anyway, earned her PhD in botany at Cornell, and began studying the genetics of maize — corn.
She was brilliant but unconventional. She worked alone in a field dominated by men. She tracked generations of corn plants by hand, counting kernels and chromosomes under a microscope. It was slow, painstaking work that most biologists considered old-fashioned.
In the 1940s and 1950s she discovered “jumping genes” — genetic elements that move from one location to another on a chromosome. The idea contradicted the prevailing view that genes were fixed and stable. Other scientists dismissed her, ignored her papers, and treated her as eccentric.
For decades she stopped publishing, tired of defending work no one believed.
The turning point
In the 1960s and 1970s, other scientists began finding similar mobile genetic elements in bacteria and other organisms. The work McClintock had done years earlier suddenly looked prescient. The field caught up to her.
In 1983, at age eighty-one, she received the Nobel Prize — the first woman to win an unshared Nobel Prize in that category. She had outlasted the sceptics.
