Who Chuck Yeager was
Chuck Yeager was a United States Air Force test pilot and fighter ace. In 1947 he flew the Bell X-1 through the sound barrier, proving that supersonic flight was possible.
The struggle
Yeager was born in 1923 in Myra, West Virginia. He grew up hunting and fixing machines. He enlisted in the Army Air Forces in 1941 and became a fighter pilot. During World War II he shot down five German planes in a single day, including a Messerschmitt 262 jet.
After the war he became a test pilot at Muroc Army Air Field in California. Test flying was dangerous. Many pilots died. The sound barrier was considered a wall that might destroy any aircraft that hit it.
Two days before his historic flight, Yeager broke two ribs in a horseback riding accident. He hid the injury from his superiors because he did not want to be removed from the mission.
The turning point
On October 14, 1947, Yeager flew the rocket-powered Bell X-1, named “Glamorous Glennis” after his wife, to Mach 1.07. The aircraft shook violently, but it held together. He had broken the sound barrier.
The achievement was kept secret for months, but it changed aviation forever. Within a few years, supersonic flight became routine. Yeager went on to set more speed and altitude records.
