Who Dr. Paul Farmer was
Dr. Paul Farmer was a physician and anthropologist who co-founded Partners In Health. He proved that world-class medical care can reach the poorest places on earth.
The struggle
Farmer grew up in a trailer park in Florida, the second of six children. His father was a salesman; his mother was a cashier. He won a scholarship to Duke, then to Harvard Medical School. But instead of staying in Boston, he kept returning to Haiti.
In the central plateau of Haiti, he found villages with no doctors, no electricity, and no roads. Tuberculosis and HIV were killing people who could have been saved with basic medicine. The global health establishment said treating the poor was too expensive and too complicated.
Farmer disagreed. He learned Creole, lived among patients, and carried medicine on his back up muddy paths.
The turning point
In 1987 Farmer and his colleagues founded Partners In Health, first in Haiti, then in Peru, Rwanda, and other countries. They refused to accept that poverty was a reason to give less care. They hired community health workers to deliver drugs and check on patients in their homes.
Farmer helped prove that treating drug-resistant tuberculosis and HIV in poor communities was not only possible but cost-effective. His methods changed global health policy. He died in 2022 while working in Rwanda, still treating patients.

The principle
You do not need to fix the whole world to matter. You need to refuse the excuse that some people are not worth the trouble. Farmer’s work was slow, specific, and stubborn — and it changed the standard of care for millions.
