Who Gregor Mendel was
Gregor Mendel is known as the father of modern genetics. His experiments with pea plants revealed how traits are inherited from one generation to the next.
The struggle
Mendel was born in 1822 in what is now the Czech Republic. His family was poor, and he entered a monastery partly because it gave him the chance to study. He failed his teacher certification exam twice.
At the Augustinian abbey in Brno, he tended the garden. He chose pea plants because they grew quickly, had visible traits, and were easy to cross-pollinate by hand. For eight years he bred tens of thousands of plants, carefully counting each colour, height, and seed shape.
No one asked him to do it. The work was repetitive and invisible.
The turning point
In 1865 Mendel presented his findings to a local scientific society. They were largely ignored. He published a paper in an obscure journal. Decades later, in 1900, three other scientists independently rediscovered his laws and brought him posthumous fame.
Mendel’s laws became the foundation of genetics. Without them, modern biology, medicine, and agriculture would be unrecognisable.
“My scientific studies have afforded me great gratification.” That was enough for him.
