Oprah Winfrey became one of the most influential media figures in history. Her talk show ran for twenty-five years, and she built a media empire including a magazine, network, and production company.
The struggle
Oprah was born in rural Mississippi in 1954 to a teenage single mother. She was raised by her grandmother, then shuttled between homes. She suffered poverty and sexual abuse. At fourteen she gave birth to a premature baby who died shortly after.
She found refuge in school and speaking. She won an oratory contest and a scholarship to Tennessee State University. At nineteen she became the first Black female news anchor at Nashville’s WLAC-TV. But when she moved to Baltimore, producers fired her from a co-anchor position because she got too invested in the stories.
They told her she was too emotional for hard news.
The turning point
Oprah did not become less emotional. She found a format that honoured it. In 1984 she moved to Chicago to host a low-rated morning talk show. Within months she turned it into the highest-rated local talk show in the city. Two years later it was syndicated nationally as The Oprah Winfrey Show.
She built her brand on honesty, empathy, and books. She started her own production company, magazine, and eventually the Oprah Winfrey Network. She became one of the wealthiest self-made women in America — and used her platform to fund schools, disaster relief, and leadership programmes for women.
“Turn your wounds into wisdom.” She lived that transformation publicly.
