He took the worst team in football and made them champions — by obsessing over the basics everyone else skipped.

Who Vince Lombardi was
Vince Lombardi was one of the greatest coaches in American football history. He led the Green Bay Packers to five NFL championships and two Super Bowl victories.
The struggle
Lombardi was born in 1913 in Brooklyn, the son of Italian immigrants. He wanted to be a Catholic priest before turning to football. He was undersized and not a natural athlete. He played football at Fordham and became a teacher and high school coach.
For years he worked as an assistant coach, waiting for a head coaching job. At forty-five he became head coach of the Green Bay Packers — the worst team in the league. Many thought he was too old and too unknown to succeed.
The turning point
Lombardi did not introduce complicated strategies. He focused on fundamentals, conditioning, and accountability. He made players run the same play over and over until it was perfect. He told them that perfection was unattainable but chasing it was everything.
In his first season the Packers finished 7-5. In his second year they reached the NFL championship game. By his third season they won it. The Packers became a dynasty. Lombardi’s name is now on the Super Bowl trophy.
“Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.”
The principle
Great teams are built on habits, not hype. Lombardi’s genius was making his players believe that ordinary actions, done with extraordinary commitment, produce extraordinary results.
Apply it today
In your work, identify the fundamentals that everyone rushes past. Practice them until they are automatic. Excellence is not a single decision. It is a thousand small decisions made correctly.
